So, after last night's drunken bitch fest--I need to report that I had a nearly perfect first day of summer school. Often, the first day is wonderful, and the following days are brutal, but I feel like things will be smooth this summer. One day down, eleven to go.
I asked my students to introduce themselves with answers to three questions that I asked. My favorite part of the class was when this one kid that I taught this year... he tried to be funny and sarcastic with the answers like some of his friends were. He said, if he could be anywhere other than summer school right now that he'd want to be at Rainforest Cafe (I had previously stated that I worked there two summers ago). He said it so awkward, though. So I pushed him. "You've been there a lot?" "What's your favorite thing to order." "Do you sit by the animals?"
He finally sputtered out, "I, uh, like it, uh, because it's just so magical."
I was proud of him. He barely said a word in class this past year, so this was pretty adventurous for him.
I did a good job today and was on top of my game. I'm sure I won't be saying this after class number 12, but, the way I see it now, this gig is a tough one to leave behind.
